Entering sound's 3rd dimension in Qatar

May 8 saw the opening of the new premises of the Shafallah Centre in Doha, Qatar, which features the revolutionary IOSONO® audio system.

The Shafallah Centre for Children with Special Needs is a state-of-the-art facility providing education and therapy to children and youths with special needs.

The educational and therapeutic programmes offered to children aged 3-21 are supported by a range of modern equipment and technology integrated into every part of the centre.

It has its own 208-seat planetarium, which is equipped with Evans & Sutherland 3D Digistar 3 laser projectors and the revolutionary IOSONO audio system. The synergy of 3D audio and video is said to provide the perfect tool for stimulating and educating the sense of hearing and the sense of sight.

The multimedia dome is also open to the public for the presentation of artistic or educational films to students, one way that the centre can integrate with - and gain the support of - the community.

Digistar 3 Laser is a new full-dome digital theatre system combining the features of Digistar 3 with the highest resolution video projection system in the world. It uses the E&S Laser Projector (ESLP®) to display over 16m pixels of video on the dome. The ESLP also offers expanded colour space - 12 bits per pixel (36-bit colour) instead of the standard 8 bits per pixel (24-bit colour).

The IOSONO Sound System is a breakthrough in spatial audio technology for the projection of recorded or amplified sound, offering ideal possibilities for theme parks, planetariums, museums and science centres.

It is said to enable every person in an audience to enjoy the same sound environment, making it a unique tool for the creation of emotionally appealing sonic landscapes. Not only the whole venue becomes the acoustic 'sweet spot' but additional individual sounds can be positioned and moved outside or even inside the venue.
